Didactics
In addition to Master of Public Health (MPH) coursework, the didactic curriculum includes weekly rounds, regular journal clubs, as well as local and national conferences. These didactics are required for all residents and occur during both years of the residency program.
During the first year, trainees who do not have a prior MPH degree (or equivalent education) complete coursework to obtain a Master of Public Health degree at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Practicum Rotations
Our program provides practicum experiences in both the public health and the health care systems.
Governmental public health rotation
The governmental public health practicum rotation focuses on training in applied epidemiology and public health, primarily occurring at the state level. Rotation options at the Wisconsin Division of Public Health include:
- Bureau of Community Health Promotions
- Bureau of Communicable Disease
- Bureau of Environmental and Occupational Health
The resident still has the opportunity to have elective experiences at additional governmental public health sites. These rotations will prepare graduates who are interested in employment at a local, state or federal health agency.
Health care system rotations
The health care system practicum rotations focus on training in quality and systems improvement, which include:
- Quality improvement rotation at Wingra Community Health Center
- Quality improvement rotation the William S. Middleton Veterans Memorial Hospital (VA)
- Office of Population Health at UW Health
Residents will also have the opportunity to develop elective rotations based on their unique interests and career goals.
Clinic Work
The majority of clinical rotations take place at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA) in multiple clinics including:
- Addiction medicine
- Infectious disease
- MOVE (weight management program)
- Primary care
- Smoking cessation
- Women’s health
Elective clinical opportunities exist through University Health Services (UHS) and through UW Health and can be explored based on resident interest and career goals.
