Preventive Medicine Residency

Each year, the University of Wisconsin Preventive Residency Program accepts two residents who have completed at least one year of clinical training. Any physician interested in health promotion and disease prevention at the population level can benefit from the training provided through a Preventive Medicine Residency.

Applicants can include residents, fellows and practicing physicians. Fellows and practicing physicians who have previously completed a board-certified residency program in another specialty (e.g. internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery, family medicine, pediatrics, etc.) have the opportunity for dual board certification.

Applicant requirements

Eligible applicants to the UW Preventive Medicine Residency Program must:

  1. Have graduated from a U.S. or Canadian medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or have graduated from a foreign medical school and be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to the start of the residency program
  2. Be a U.S. citizen, permanent legal resident (hold a green card) or hold/be eligible for a J-1 clinical visa sponsored by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (note: UW Hospital and Clinics will not sponsor H-1 temporary worker visas)
  3. Have completed at least one year of clinical training in an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited residency program prior to the start of UW Preventive Medicine Residency Program
  4. Have successfully completed United States Medical Licensing Examination steps I, II and III prior to the start of the residency program
  5. Have a valid medical license in the U.S. (Wisconsin medical license is needed prior to the start of the residency program)

Application timeline

Applicants using the Electronic Residency Application Service may apply after Sept. 1.

Formal applications will be accepted for the July residency cycle between Sept. 1 and Oct. 31 of the year prior to entry. Applications completed after Oct. 31 may be considered on a space-available basis at the discretion of the residency director.

We participate in the NRMP match which takes place on March 21, 2025.

ERAS Application Requirements

Residency applications are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

The following materials are required as part of the ERAS application:

  1. A one page, single-spaced, personal statement describing interest in preventive medicine, past experiences in public health and goals for training, and specifying what track (general or cancer prevention or both) you are interested in
  2. One letter or recommendation from the program director of your clinical training program and two other letters of recommendation dated within six months of application
  3. Medical school transcript
  4. Medical school performance evaluation
  5. United States Medical Licensing Examination scores or National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners COMLEX scores
  6. An Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certificate, if applicable
  7. A master in public health degree (or equivalent training) transcript, if applicable. If you do not have a master in public health, you will be required to fill out the appropriate paperwork for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Master of Public Health Program at the time of acceptance to the residency program.

During recruitment season, after a candidate’s ERAS application is complete, the PMR staff will begin reviewing the application. 

Application Process at University of Wisconsin - Madison

Those selected for the Residency Program will also be required to complete the application process for admission to the MPH Program within the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and will be provided with those instructions at the appropriate time.
