Arlington Research Station Visit
As part of PMR didactics, residents recently spent a day at the UW Arlington Agricultural Research Station in Arlington, WI. The station serves as a living “outdoor laboratory” where crop management, soil science, livestock nutrition, and sustainable agricultural systems is studied. Residents got a look at how field-based research is designed and conducted. Seeing researchers in action helped deepen our understanding of population health concepts in a broader environmental and community context. We especially enjoy opportunities like this to get off campus, engage with experts in different settings, and enrich our didactic learning with these immersive experiences.
Fall PMR Barbeque
The PMR community gathered this fall at Elizabeth’s home for a relaxed barbecue that brought residents, leadership, faculty, and friends of the program together. It was great to be able to connect and strengthen our relationships outside of the office!
HRSA visit
In November, we were pleased to host a site visit from HRSA Director, Tom Engels, and HRSA CMO, Dr. Ann Sheehy. Both are Wisconsin natives and their visit brought together many supporters of our Preventive Medicine Residency, including the new Dean of the School of Medicine and Public Health, Dr. Nita Ahuja. While Engels and Sheehy expressed clear support for ongoing funding for PMRs, they also emphasized that final funding decisions are made beyond their offices. At this time, it remains uncertain if there will be an opportunity to apply for HRSA funding beyond 2027.
Recruitment Update
This year, we made the difficult decision to pause recruiting new residents for the 2026 cycle. While PMR funding has always been fluid and challenging, the current landscape of federal funding has made it difficult to anticipate future funding opportunities beyond June 2027. Given this uncertainty, we felt it was both responsible and necessary to take a step back and assess our path forward before continuing the recruitment process. This was not an easy choice, but we have not been resting this year. We continue working toward solutions toward a sustainable future for the program. We remain completely committed to our current residents and are hopeful we will be able to recruit for the 2027 cycle.
